East Fork of South Fork - Salmon River Watershed Analysis

Project Parameters

mining heavy metals
watershed analysis

The watershed analysis utilized the six-step process outlined in the Federal Guide for Watershed Analysis. The watershed analysis team evaluated hydrology, erosion processes, channel morphology, aquatic species and habitats, and water quality in relationship to a historic mining area. GIS products, such as the lithology map shown below, provided critical information to evaluate pollution sources within the context of natural and human impacts. PWI evaluated occurrence of heavy metals in the river in relationship to naturally-occurring and mining sources in the drainage. Heavy metals were flushed into the river from high runoff events in the spring. The watershed analysis provided a technical framework for decision making in a historically altered watershed with sensitive aquatic resources.
